Latest media report of Raiders game
Dorset Storm Blow Cowboys Away
Sep 24, 2012, 9:22 am

Dorset Storm Cavs 85 - Weymouth Cowboys 41
Weymouth Cowboys travelled to Bournemouth to play a pre-season friendly against a team who finished 3rd in the division above them last season.
An already difficult task was made harder by the absence of key players. The first quarter showed promise with Gerry Legg-Saunders, Lee Bennett and Lee Grinrod all getting in on the scoring, culminating in a deficit of only 4 points at the end of the quarter, 17 - 13.
The game went downhill in the second quarter with pressure defense from The Cavs causing the inexperienced Cowboys to turn the ball over multiple times resulting in breakaway dunks by Mo Cisse, Cavs extended to a large half time lead to 39 - 21.
The second half continued where the first left off with turnover ball continuing to hinder Cowboys efforts and the smaller side struggling to capture rebounds though kept up the intensity.  With Jamie Harris controlling the tempo there were some bright moments of slick passing and hard defensive from Jordan Daniels playing in the middle of a zone defense which showed some promise for the season from a group of new players getting to know each other. This was not enough as Caves closed out the game with a final score of 85 - 41.
New Cowboys coach Tim Kingman said, "This was never about winning the game as we were up against a much stronger side with experience of playing together. It was about taking a look at new players, combinations and seeing what areas we need to work on in training."
Gerry Legg-Saunders 9, Lee Bennett 8, Giles Heaman 7, Lee Grinrod 6, Jamie Harris 4, Jordan Daniels 2, Jeff Robertshaw 2, Rich Wheeler 2, Jim De Bertrand 1, Tommy Hodson.

End of Season Awards
Jul 2, 2012, 10:43 am

Weymouth Basketball Club marked the end of their 2011/12 season with their annual presentation, celebrated at Weymouth Sports Club.

The club has enjoyed continued success over the season, developing their 8 teams; having 3 players called up to southwest regional team and adding more players from all over south Dorset.

Highlights also include improvements in the youth development programme, co-ordinated by Alex Fuhrmann, on Saturday afternoons. The U12/U14/U16 all competed in the SABA (Solent Area Basketball Association) central venue leagues, with U12 and U16 both coming within 1 game of the league title.

The men’s teams; Weymouth Tandoori Bandits, GH Podiatry Cowboys and Raiders all showed a completive spirit in their respective leagues with mixed results. GH Podiatry Cowboys showed their youth and enthusiasm, winning some very high profile games in their respective competition; Tandoori Bandits finished a respectable mid table and Raiders still looking for their first win as they aim towards the new season.

Weymouth Huskies (ladies), showed determination and promise, switching to the more completive Solent league but unfortunately loosing players to injuries and career changes. This resulted in a very tough season, though receiving praise from the league in their approach and spirit.

Presentations were made to individual players from each team in the club, these included: Most Valuable Player, Most Improved, Best Defensive and Clubman. Two more awards were also made to those in the club who had made the effort off the court, giving out Coach of the Year and the Huw Price Service to Basketball Trophy. Coach of the year went to volunteer U12 assistant coach Russ Weaver while the latter, given for outstanding service to the club, was presented to Tandoori Bandits and Huskies head coach Che Osborne.

Club chairman Tim Kingman said: “We would like to thank all members and parents for attending the evening, and to our sponsors Weymouth Tandoori and GH Podiatry for their support throughout the year. It’s clear from our turn out that we are having a positive impact on our community and look forward to adding to the success.”

The club’s senior men’s teams are training throughout the summer and welcome those who wish to attend at the Weymouth College Sports Hall. For more details of current training and the new season in September, visit www.weymouthbasketball.co.uk.

End of Season Presentation
Jun 7, 2012, 4:05 pm

We're pleased to announce that our end of season presentation has a date set and we are looking forward to seeing you all there!

Date - 15th June.
Venue - Weymouth Community Sports Hub (Redlands), Dorchester Rd.
Time - 7pm

We have opted to bring the evening out of town as we understand that the younger players can get itchy feet and want to run about... so we're happy that its going to be in the safety of a park/grass area, than the town centre... also, means parents/carers can have a relaxing drink, worry free(ish).

We'd like to encourage everyone to attend, their will be 4 player awards given out to each team: U12 up to Bandits (certificates for Lion U9). Please bring along all friends and family as we hope it to be a positive event with us celebrating another wonderful year of basketball in Weymouth.

Hope to see you there!

Cowboys Fall but Stay Up
May 25, 2012, 6:42 am

Weymouth Cowboys 63 – 70 Southampton Uni B

After hosting them only a week previous, the Weymouth Cowboys saddled up for their season finale at Southampton Uni, the Southampton side keen to bounce back from defeat.

First shot of the game was a made three pointer from Weymouth's Andy Steele, wide open from a well executed motion offense. The first quarter had the teams exchanging baskets at frantic pace which saw all five starting players for the travelling side get on the score sheet. After ten minutes there was nothing between the teams, each having scored 19. A continued quick tempo from both sides had player/coach Eric Olson make good use of the supporting cast. Frequently substituting and changing defensive arrangements. However, the hosts were edging away with a lead from fast breaks and three point shots. Weymouth's youngster Jack Speary had five unanswered points midway through the second quarter, and with spirited play from Sam Dodge their lead was lessened, and the halftime score was 41-33.

Being behind by eight points Olsen called a man to man defence which had an immediate effect on the visitors fortunes. Smothering the Uni side, they only managed to score nine points the entire quarter. Good defence led to a good offense and the Cowboys blazed forward. Dodge scored eight points in the third and a three point shot from Weymouth’s veteran bench had them up by as many as nine points at one stage.

All good things must come to an end, and the final quarter proved miserable for the Cowboy gunslingers. Not scoring in the final quarter for four minutes by which time Southampton Uni were up by three. Cowboy Phil Romano had some daring attempts at the basket, but somehow the ball only dropping in on one. The hosts stretched out a lead further still with no answer from Weymouth and the game finished 63-70.

Coach Olson gave praise to the efforts of all his players, ''A gutsy performance from start to finish, making good use of the offense we have been trying to perfect all season long''

The seasons end highlights big changes for Weymouth Cowboys. Both Rob Legg and Phil Romano both go off to university next year and some players have prospects of getting promoted to the first team.

Scorers/Roster: Andy Steele 15, Sam Dodge 14, Jack Speary 9, Ben Stokey 6, Steve Howlett 5 Giles Heaman 5, Jamie Dixon 5, Rob Legg 2, Filippo Romano 2, Eric Olson.
